The club went on tanseki (stone collecting) to Dos Rios on the Eel River at the end of May. Fortunately, the hot weather disappeared and we had two lovely days. Joining us as guests on the first day were: Mr. and Mrs. Yamaguchi from the Japanese consulate and Sharon and Larry Hoffman from Massachusetts.

For anyone interested in attending, the 2008 Meeting schedule has now been set. Please note that the March meeting will be held on Friday 3/14 (instead of the usual Thursday) due to the room availability.
Two stone-collecting (tanseki) trips have been tentatively scheduled for May and October. These dates may change however based on member availability.

San Francisco Suiseki Kai held its 25th Anniversary exhibit in August 2006 at the Miyako Hotel in San Francisco. Members showed more than 100 of their best stones, which were all photographed for a book commemorating the event. The book includes 52 pages of stone photographs, as well as historical information about the club and Mr. Hirotsu, its first sensei and founder. We are immensely grateful to Carl Morimoto, the editor of the Golden State Bonsai Federation magazine Golden Statements, for the countless hours of work he put in to make this book.

San Francisco Suiseki Kai recently held its 26th Annual Exhibit at the Japan Center in San Francisco. Many local suiseki enthusiasts attend this show, in addition to tourists and locals who find us when visiting the Japan Center. For some of these visitors it is the first time they have ever seen (or even heard of) suiseki, and they always seem to enjoy it.
The club encourages every member to exhibit several stones. Each member selects one of their displayed stones to be part of a competition, judged by the membership. The three stones with the most votes are awarded plaques, and the next five are awarded ribbons. The previous year’s award winners are displayed in the front window of the exhibition room.
In addition to suiseki, there are usually a few “biseki” displayed. These are viewing stones that may be enjoyed for their beautiful colors or patterns, or perhaps for a humorous shape.
These are the 2007 Plaque awards.
